Easily Influenced

I have to say, I am a person that is easily influenced. Not for all things, mind you, although commercials really do me in sometimes... especially with dessert... and fashion... and gadgets...crap. Anywho - when I'm shown alarming facts, gruesome pictures or overall crazy things... I tend to get, how do I say... crazy?

I think its time for another LIST! I love LISTS. LISTS LISTS LISTS.

Vegetarianism:
I've briefly discussed why I gave up meat a long time ago but we'll just talk about the actual source of this declaration. I read Fast Food Nation last year and found the facts to be a little stomach turning (there's shit in the meat!). Several months ago, I watched the movie (don't bother) and they displayed the slaughtering of a cow. And I cried. A lot. Then I read Dan Mathews' memoir (fantastic read from a VP of PETA) and it also had a few facts.

The truth of the matter is, I read the facts, saw some startling images and now cannot erase the images from my head. I cannot eat meat without picturing some poor animal.

We just watched Year of the Dog and I'm considering going Vegan because somehow, somewhere, I lost my mind and became super sensitive about animals.

Oh and based on facts about food, I imagine that if I ever get pregnant - I will be batshit crazy about what I eat. Organic! Vegan! Vitamins! Oh my!

Environment:
I don't necessarily find my incessant recycling and energy saving ways to be crazy. I think its a good thing but after watching An Inconvenient Truth... WATCH OUT!

I'm in a constant state of panic right now and must quickly get to a store to buy...
- all new lights fixtures (the current ones we have are too small for energy saving lightbulbs)
- all new lighbulbs
- a hybrid car (I've wanted one for awhile but currently... its not in the budget)
- and the list goes on and on

But seriously - the Earth is tanking! Did you not see his GRAPHS?! Polar Bears are drowning! Antartica is falling apart! Manhattan will be under water soon! aaaah!

Okay, I'm not really panicking that much but am a little startled. The biggest influence over me, however, was the alarming rate in which our population has increased over the last 50 years. Its more than tripled... quadrupled even. That's some scary shit. Its basically put my biological clock on SNOOZE for a long time and now I'm thinking adoption is something I'd like to look more into.

I'm not judging those that have kids or are currently pregnant... unless you're pregnant and totally unprepared but don't even get me started... but aahhh! We're eating up all the resources!

Death:
After reading Stiff, I have decided (and this sort of goes with the whole being environmental thing) that I do not wish to be buried in a coffin or cremated (it pollutes the air). I'm hoping that human composte technology is perfected by the time I die and I've instructed The Mr. to turn me into composte and plant a tree with it.

If it hasn't been perfected, I said I'd rather be placed in a pine box in the back yard. Why waste more resources? At least in the pine box, it'll break down and nature will take its course. Although I think if people found a dead body in the backyard, The Mr. would be called in for questioning.

I really could go on and on but I think I've shared enough crazy for today. What influences you?

You're a nut, but I love you!! :)

I completely understand your new found convictions about animals and the environment.

We've already discussed the vegetarianism, and I didn't realize that the poop factor was one of the reasons. I agree poop isn't good to eat, but it is literally EVERYWHERE. Oprah did a show about germs and when they swabbed things, they found feces in 9 out of 10 places...it's disgusting, but unless we live in a bubble, we're gonna come into contact with some shit :)

Ok...I can't really speak about the Inconvenient Truth because I haven't seen the movie or read the book, but seriously...Al Gore?!?! The same guy that invented the Internet?!?!? I did a quick Google search and apparently the movie had some misleading graphs in it. They said the book had the correct graphs, but if they purposely put in inaccurate graphs for the movie to cause a panic...I think that's kinda shady.

I'm all for the human compost thing though...I was gonna do the cremation route, but being turned into fertilizer seems much cooler! :)

Now to get to you question..what influences me?? I'd have to say friends and family...and Björk!! hahaha!!!

ok, so that was a lame comment and i did it to be funny, tho i think i failed.

i can understand the whole vegetarianism thing. i was vegetarian for a while and once i went back to meat, it was only poultry and fish. it took me 8 years to get back into red meat and i love it, shit be damned.

movies always dramatize things to grab the attention of the watcher, but don't get me wrong, i do think the world is ending!

::sigh::

do you even read my blogs anymore? ::cry::

"An Inconvenient Truth" really caused a torrential panic among its viewers. I watched it, and I believe that we need to be wary of the issues of our environment, but a lot of that movie was portrayed in a way to make it sound like all of this will happen tomorrow. A lot of the issues that are mentioned are already too far along for any of us to do anything about it. Maybe the earth and its inhabitants weren't meant to be here for eternity and this is the beginning of the final cycle?

Going vegan would definitely be a good idea. I think it's cool that you truly understand the multi-faceted benefits of the diet. You should go to veganadam.com

it's a non-profit, non-donation community portal for vegans and vegetarians and is geared toward animal rights. There is a ton of free resources there and people to meet.
