Jumping on the Bandwagon

I'm sure that you've heard by now about Ellen's on-air breakdown regarding a dog. No? You can read related articles here and here.

Basically, she adopted the dog through a rescue and the dog did not get along with her cats so she gave the dog away to her hairdresser (who has kids). When the rescue called her asking how the dog was doing, she said she had given the dog away. Anyone who's ever rescued a dog (and that's me!) knows that the contract you sign states that if you're having issues with the dog (like, say... its not getting along with your other pets), you have to give the dog back to the rescue.

I don't think one can misunderstand this. Its clear as day. They are a RESCUE. They want to see the dog go to a proper home. A lot of times this means a home with no children. Have you ever seen a child play with a dog? While some find it endearing, I HATE when small children run up to our dogs in the park. They scare the shit out of them. Why? Imagine being a midget and having a giant, run at you full speed with its arms flailing about and tell me that you wouldn't be slightly nervous. They yank on their ears and tails... try to pick them up roughly, etc. I'm getting angry just thinking about it!

So, Ellen went on the air and cried about this. I'm not even giving her a hard time about crying because I cry about all animal related things these days. Its tough. What angers me is her plea with the rescue. And that she went on air and used her celebrity status to gain some leverage. Now this rescue is receiving threats. Awesome. Good job, Ellen.

I love Ellen so this whole situation really upsets me. Who knew she was such a turd to use her status for evil. And her blog entry is infuriating! She ends it with "please please please". Really? How old are you?

This reminds me of a story about a friend. She purchased a specific breed of dog as a puppy. She loved this puppy lots and when it got older, she decided that she wanted to rescue a dog of the same breed. Puppies and rescued dogs are very different.

Anywho - the rescued dog had a lot of issues and then became very attached to the friend to the point where she'd snap at people for getting too close.

What did my friend do? SHE PUT THE DOG DOWN! I am still appalled to this day. She should have given the dog back to the rescue whose purpose is to keep the dogs alive in loving environments! She honestly said to me, "well, if I couldn't train it, nobody could." People drive me nuts.

It just saddens me that this story is now putting some sort of negative spin on rescues. I think rescues are great organizations and since rescuing my dogs - I have vowed to only adopt rescued dogs. I'm not trying to start a war of words here but in the words of Terri and Jamie... YAAARRRGG!

I hear ya girl! I saw Ellen's breakdown and I understand why she's upset -- but there are rules and regulations for a reason. Even working at BARCS, which isn't a rescue but a shelter, we even have rules and guidelines on who can or cannot adopt an animal.

I love Ellen too and I'm disappointed that she used her show as a staging ground as a plea to the rescue.

YARG!

Maybe I'm alone here - but I don't have an issue with what Ellen did or even that she's upset. I know that if we couldn't care for our dog that my mom would end up taking her (knowing it's a good fit). I could essentially get in trouble for that I guess. And when we adopted Tessa - I had no idea that the paper said I had to give her back.

I think the shelter had a right to look into the situation to make sure it's right. I think they were obligated to do so. But unless they determined that this other home was a bad one for that particular puppy, I think it was wrong for them to go in and take it.

Okay whoa that was long! There's my 2 cents:)

I hate when ever celebs use their status for their own gain. It makes me ill.

I love Ellen, but I'm disappointed that she used her show to beg for the dogs return. Rules are in place for a reason, but at least she admitted it was her fault.

I think the agency has to do what they think is best for the dog. Kids are mean...The End :)

i'm with the majority of the commenters ... i hate when celebs use their status to get out of tight squeezes or to bend the rules.

i'm sorry ... but a celeb is no better than you or i ... except they bring joy to many lives and make millions of dollars ... and are usually good looking or beautiful (we are too!) ... and have paparazzi and amazing homes and fancy cars and ... BAH!!! i'm going off on a different tangent!! my point is, i hate when celebs get preferential treatment because they're celebs and have money ... and big homes ... and ...

i'm done.

i think that ellen perhaps has some celebrity-itis, she probably just signed the papers and didnt' pay attention, although that's not much of an excuse. i did feel for her though, because i think she was doing the thing she thought best for the dog. i also have a rescue, though, and although the humane society didn't tell us we HAD to take it back, they were very thorough about adoption and rules and all that. . . it's a HUGE responsibility, but people don't really realize that.
