Let's Get Physical

I made an appointment to get a physical. Actually, I told the receptionist that I wanted a "full physical" although I'm not quite sure what that entails. I don't think I've had a physical since I was a little kid but lately, I've been feeling very tired and more paranoid about my health.

So, any 20-something year old women out there that have had a physical exam recently? What did you have to do? I assumed I'd have to get bloodwork done but the lady on the phone said I didn't need to do anything beforehand and that the appointment would last about 45 minutes.

What are they going to do? I want them to read my cholesterol and whatever else doctor's can read from your blood so that I know that I'm not going to die. Well, at least not die from high sugar or whatever. Ack.

I'm preparing a list of questions for the doctor. My Glamour magazine tells me that I should do this so that I am sure that all of my concerns are covered between the rushing into the office, quick medical stats and rushing out the door of the doctor. Here are my questions:

(1) I've been feeling very tired lately. This feeling lasts with me all day. What gives?

(2) I have difficulty sleeping through the night. What gives?

(3) I find that I get up at least 2 times per night to pee. What gives?

(4) I fart. A lot. Like insanely a lot. Like I'm lucky that someone still wants to have sex with me I fart so much. I've always been this way (so don't blame the vegetarian diet!). What gives?

Yeah yeah yeah, its TMI. What questions would you ask your doctor? I feel like I'm forgetting something basic to ask...

Tired, trouble sleeping... pregnant? Hehee, just kidding!

Physical's aren't that bad. They just check your blood pressure, reflexes, eyes, nose, throat, lungs, etc. Then they send you to a lab to get bloodwork done.

I would ask their recommend ages to get tests done. I would also discuss any familial health issues because they should always be very aware of them

Do you excercise? I find that when I don't excercise I have way less energy. I also think that when I eat to much sugar I get tired very easily.

I hope it goes well. I had my cholesterol checked two years ago and was surprised that it was right at 200. I was eating very very healthy and excercising three times a week so it was great to find that out when I was early 20s instead of when it was too late.

I just did that a few months ago - and THANK GOD I DID! I had a full bloodwork run and it showed I had the cholesterol of a morbidly obese person (dead serious - my dr called me in early to give me the results & kept asking me if i had problems breathing and had chest pains) - I am on meds now and have brought it down over 50% (haha must have been the fact that it runs in my family and that my diet was fried and cheese!!! whoops!) Hopefully soon i'll be off meds, but i'm glad i found out now - I wouldn't have seen my 30's!!

Oh and definetly get as much family history as you possibly can - parents, grandparents, aunts uncles, etc. That helps them look for things and also in the future too.

Good Luck!!!

I think this post is hilarious! I did have a physical within the last 6 months. They'll go over your family history and your own medical history and check your ears, nose, throat, lungs and probably push on your stomach for some reason. I don't know what that does but they've always done that to me. And they should do bloodwork just to check your nutrition, hydration, sugar and cholesterol levels.

Have you changed your caffeine intake, exercise, etc.? Or possibly you're not getting enough iron - that def can make you tired and they can determine that in the bloodwork.

Now the farting problem - not really sure that anything will show up in your bloodwork on that one. I think that that's just a problem you (and your poor hubby and Petie and Emily) will have to live with!

I think you're a farty, paranoid, vegetarian insomniac.

And HOT.

I'm curious about my cholesterol. And also? I kind of want a colonoscopy. TMI, but yeah, I wonder. I hear the word "polyps" a lot and it has me paranoid. I could have the polyps! Oh noes the polyps!

i think it's a good idea to routinely have a physical. can't hurt, right?

questions to ask my doctor:

1. why are your hands so cold?
2. why do you write like crap?
3. (as he's checking the prostate) why, doctor, are both your hands on my shoulders? (ok, TMI)

anytime i have a physical i get a complete workup. blood and urine tests, lymphynode checks, etc ... my insurance covers it so why not do it, right?
