I freaking loved this movie. It was such a beautiful and simple story without any sort of special editing, special effects, etc. Its about a boy (well, a MAN) who meets a girl that inspires him to pursue his love of music. There's nothing overtly sexual in this movie (and that's almost refreshing) although the tension is definitely there.
What I really loved (as I'm sure most people did) was the music! I wasn't terribly familiar with Glen Hansard or his original group The Frames prior to this. I also didn't know that he was in The Commitments! I mean, I was 11 yrs old when that came out.
After the movie concluded and I finished choking back tears (god I cry over everything these days), I declared that I was going to immediately download the soundtrack as soon as I got my Christmas present (an iPod). But I was at the store today and couldn't resist so I bought the cd. Its frickin' amazing. Glen reminds me of Damien Rice and if you don't know Damien Rice, GOOGLE HIM NOW!

I love The Committments. That's one of my all time favorite movies. And I get really defensive when people don't like it.
i love the committments too! i saw it in the theater in monterey, ca and then immediately went out and bought the soundtrack.
YAY! I'm glad you loved it, too! The movie is fabulous, as is the soundtrack. And I totally thought the same thing about Glen and Damien Rice. Glen opened for him on tour! Funny, huh?
Oh! And if it makes you feel any better, Glen and Mariska (I think that's her name?) are dating in real life!
he was Outspan! I loved Outspan!
Flashbacks!!
Ok, back to scheming.
I loved this movie too! You should go and see There Will Be Blood when it comes out after Christmas. It is the best movie EVER!
Yes, I was basically in the same boat as you... I requested and received Once for Christmas and it is a great and down-to-earth movie. I liked several of the songs and downloaded the soundtrack from iTunes.
I loved the Commitments too
