Renovation Headaches

Renovating a home that you're living in is NOT FUN. So far all we've really managed to do was purchase a dishwasher, tile backsplash, tile floors and the countertop. Because our kitchen is the size of a shoebox (no joke!), getting a dishwasher was not as easy as it sounded.

A standard sized dishwasher was not going to fit into our space unless we redid the bottom cabinets and down-sized the sink. Not a big deal, right? WRONG. So very wrong. Before purchasing the dishwasher, we paid a trip to Home Depot and saw some ready-made cabinets that looked exactly like our cabinets. After some quick math, we determined that if we got a standard dishwasher, we'd just need a single basin sink and a 30" sink base cabinet. We saw it in the store and thought we were done.

Yesterday, The Mr. saw a 30" base cabinet in Lowes and it was already assembled. So we bought it to compare. Okay - here are the issues:

Home Depot's Cabinet:
The right color... exactly. The doors are little bigger than the others and the overall height is a 1/2" too tall. There is a small detail that's different but you'd only notice it if you were looking. Same with the doors. Only when compared side by side with other base cabinets would you notice the difference (in my opinion).

Lowes:
Wrong color. Its slightly off. Right height and style.

I think that when a color is off, its more noticeable. But we're screwed. This is not as simple as we thought. We decided to take the Lowes cabinet back and work with the Home Depot one. The Mr. recruited some help and decided that he is going to trim down the cabinet. I'm a little worried.

We also need to have our countertops OFF and all the cabinetry and dishwasher in place before the countertop company can come to our house and measure the template. Oy, what a pain in the ass. On top of all that, I have to take time off work to be a tthe house so they can come by and measure. After they measure - they countertops won't be in place for another 2 weeks. I WILL BE WITHOUT A KITCHEN FOR 2-3 WEEKS! I know I'm not a big cook or anything, but I'm crazy. I have to have things a certain way to feel at peace. I will be without peace for 2-3 weeks!

The moral of the story? Don't renovate a house that you're living in. I think this blog is going to turn from life as a newlywed to life in an unfinished home while living with a person who thinks he should have his own show on HGTV.

I'll blog about my weekend tomorrow but in the meantime... tell me about yours!

I agree that if the color is off that's the first thing I'd notice too. Nothing is ever easy when it comes to remodeling. I'm sure the Mr will do a spendid job modifying the Home Depot cabinets to get the right height. I heard that he's very good with his hands. :)

My weekend was mostly good...ended a little crappy, but I'll survive.
Can't wait to hear about Courtney's party :)

My parents gutted and completely renovated their kitchen and upstairs hardwood floors so they were not only without a kitchen for several weeks but they couldn't really go upstairs because the floors were being worked on. They were relegated to the small family room area in the basement where they slept on a sofa bed and had only a toaster and microwave to cook with. Needless to say, they ate out a lot.
If they can get through it without killing each other, believe me, you guys will be fine. You'll love the end results so much once it's over that you'll just laugh (in time) about the few weeks of torture. :)

wow .. i seem to be in a very agreeable mood as i will, once again, agree with jamie on this one. color will definitely catch the eye quicker than 1/2 of an inch in height, but with a little shaving on the bottom, it should be fine. as for the cabinet doors ... well, just tell people they're bigger because you need more room to rifle through and get your cleaning supplies. they'll understand.

i'm really not that arty and my masthead was created using paint ship pro X ... i just googled images i wanted, found them, saved them, and then created the banner and uploaded it. easy peasy. perhaps you'll find one in your emailbox soon, eh? hmm?

we definitely do have to get together again soon. i miss you a lot too. dinner sounds like a plan at some point, tho definitely not at your place seeing as you won't have a kitchen! god ... way to go! love you. tell the mr. i says hi!
