Grazing...

Ack - I can't stop grazing on food!

Does anyone have this problem? I work in an environment that resembles most of corporate America - cube farms! Being on my ass for 8 hours a day really takes a toll on me (and hopefully explains why I'm diligent about working out).

I have a serious snacking problem. I know its out of boredom. I'm sitting here... staring at a computer screen, listening to my iPod and I just want to snack. I've tried the water thing, the gum thing, the take a quick walk thing but sometimes the urge to snack is overwhelming.

If I think about something food related (ooh, I have a bag of york peppermint patties in my desk), then I obsess over it. I'm not even hungry but I HAVE to eat whatever I'm obsessing over.

Perhaps the solution would be that I should empty my desk of the cookies, chocolate and pretzel sticks...? Nah. What if we're trapped at work and I have to eat something? That's why I keep that bottle of water in my car. You just never know.

How to you curb your cravings?

OH! I am such a snacker. I have a bag of pretzel things, tea, hot chocolate, dove caramel things, twizzlers, oatmeal, craisins, and who knows what else in my desk.

I do the exact same thing. I know something is in the drawer and I obsess over it until I just find myself diving headfirst into the drawer only to come out with crumbs on my chin.

To curb it a little I chew gum. I just got this kind that is chocomint. OH!!!!! FabUlous. But it comes in those damn 9 packs that I can rip through in two days. It has the flavor of those EL Fudge grasshopper cookies. Not that I could rub my face in them either.

Perhaps you should keep the food in the car along with your bottle of water-- that way at least if you eat it, you will have walked your ass to the car and burned calories;)

Gum, Gum, and more Gum. Different flavors too. :)

My craving isn't food but juice (or water if we have ran out of cordial).

I have no way of combating this craving, which just means that I have to have toilet breaks every 15 minutes with all the drinking I do.

Recently (courtesy of my new health kick) I stocked up on fruit and other healthy snacks. I bring about 3 snacks to work everyday so that when I see the candy or cakes that are sitting out from coworkers I can resist and just eat my snack instead. At least that way when I'm snacking, it's healthier food. Not quite as satisfying, but I don't feel guilty about eating crappy food at work anymore.

Couple options, all reasonable in their own right:

1. Stop carrying cash or coins. It's harder to buy junk food when you don't have scratch in your pocket.

2. Drink tea. It gives you the thrill of grazing, it isn't something you can just immediately consume, it gives you a little bit of a jolt and it's not overloaded with caffeine, like coffee, to make you jittery or raise your heartrate.

3. Start smoking. Not only is it incredibly sophisticated to smoke, it will curb those cravings instantaneously.

Just a thought.

I chew on straws. (I guess I held on to Freud's psychosexual oral fixation theory throwout life) It's a really bad habit that will eventually probably cause my teeth to shift, but hey...no added calories. :-)

I agree with the straws and gum. Stay away from all managers desks. They think it is so cute to have little candies.

The tea thing works as well.
