So much to write - there was Thanksgiving, Black Friday shopping and my favorite... my 10 year high school reunion. I'm just going to focus on Thanksgiving for this post.
Holy fuck. I think I created a monster when I invited my parents over last year. This year, my mother expected nothing short of a turkey (not caring that her only child is a VEGETARIAN), loads of other foods and for it to all be perfect.
We originally planned to have my parents come over at 2:30pm. Around 10am, I realized that we still had not cleaned the house (the topic of discussion the previous Thanksgiving... that woman actually lifted up my toilet seat to check for cleanliness!) and we hadn't started the food. I called my mom and pushed the time back to 3:30pm.
Around 1pm, we still hadn't popped the Whole Foods fresh turkey into the oven. And well - we have a shitty oven. God forbid you try to cook 2 things at once - I'm pretty sure hell would freeze over.
I had to start all of the sides first and just warm them later. We were running very behind schedule.
I called my mom and asked to push the time back to 4:30pm to which she responded, "Okay - but I'm hungry." I told her to eat some snacks.
They came over and the turkey still wasn't ready and I don't think I ever heard the end of it. She repeatedly told The Mr that he needed to crank the temp or that we should have started earlier. I think it's official - he's a part of the family because she wasn't shy about critiquing him.
She's inspecting the turkey.
Okay - so here are just a bunch of pictures because I just don't have it in me to write tonight!
Our lovely fancy cheese platter, courtesy of Whole Foods. It was also an opportunity to finally use my cheese cutter and knives.
One of the things I like about Thanksgiving is that I get to bust out all of the wedding china and fancy silverware. My dad is unimpressed.
My dad is talking about old people stuff... like getting operated on his heart. Juli's mom looks enthralled.
My mom loving my dogs. It still boggles my mind that she's so sweet with my dogs and yet got rid of my childhood dog, Sweetiepie.
My dad is happy to finally be eating... 3 hours AFTER we told them to come over.
Finally - she stopped talking and actually looks like she's enjoying the food.
Some quick highlights from the entire evening:
1) My mom, in her state of hunger, constantly approached me and said, "[The Mr] is so hungry, Kimmy..." or "honey, your dad is very hungry." I had a sneaking suspicion that she was talking about herself.
2) Upon realizing that we didn't have ham (seriously - she doesn't care that I'm a vegetarian), she moaned, "No ham?! Oh no! Your dad is going to be so upset." My dad didn't care. Again, I had a sneaking suspicion that she was talking about herself.
3) My mom complimented the crap out of The Mr and the wonderful meal he put together when it was ME that prepared most of the items! Yarg!
4) My mom was appalled by the way I cut the pumpkin pie. She was so appalled that she took the knife from me and did it herself. Wow.
5) We told my parents to come over at 4:30pm and didn't actually start eating until about 7:30pm. Whoops.
6) And now I know where my crankiness when I'm hungry comes from.
That's about all I can think of right now. I love my parents but good lord, my mom was on fire this holiday!

Goodness! It's a wonder you survived!
I'm glad you made it. I wonder if the cleanliness thing skips a generation, because I totally looked under my parents' toilet to show them where the nasty smell lies, and I made my mother wash all her dishtowels before I set foot in the kitchen, because the woman just doesn't smell the mildew.
But then again, it was actually her idea that we have a vegetarian dinner, and both of them loved it. However, I've been told oh yes, there will be ham at Christmas.
She sounds like my mother-in-law! I always have to make sure our house is spotless and that everything is perfect when they come to visit. Eek...glad you survived!!
Ha! My sister likes to pull that "So-and-so is SO upset that you're not ______" crap. They are never upset. She is upset, she's just afraid to say it.
It looks like you guys had an interesting Thanksgiving, at least!
Your childhood dog's name was Sweetiepie? I love that.
asian moms...what can you do. at least it was memorable and you got some great parent pics :)
