When I Grow Up

I had a funny conversation with some co-workers about what we wanted to be when we were little kids.

Did you ever think you'd end up where you are now as an adult?

In elementary school, I wanted to be a veterinarian. Didn't every little kid want to be one? I'm not quite sure why I wanted to be one considering I didn't really grow up with pets. This dream was crushed after...

... my first cat Snowball attacked me. My parents promptly gave Satan Snowball away. I only got to hang with Snowball for like a week.

... my mom gave away my first dog. She was a miniature schnauzer named Sweetiepie. My parents let me name her. Sweetiepie was great. She would dig under our backyard fence and terrorize my neighbor's evil dog. I like to think she was looking out for me. My mom, however, got tired of being the sole caretaker of my dog (I was 7, what do you expect?) so she gave her away. I think I'm still traumatized from that.

... my pet hamster, Teddy, bit me everytime I tried to pick him up.

I wasn't very good with animals. It was time to find a new profession.

In middle school, I updated my dream job to lawyer. Why? I found out that they made a lot of money (generally speaking). This quickly went away when I realized that I hated speaking in front of crowds (I was painfully shy). I wasn't aware that all lawyers weren't litigation lawyers.

In high school, I had no aspirations really. I spent the first half just hoping to not have to work. After taking a psychology course, I wanted to be a clinical psychologist and work in a mental hospital. I think a part of me would still enjoy that.

Then college came. I took a bunch of psych courses (I actually have a minor in psych) but after realizing how much I hated school... I knew I wouldn't pursue a PhD, therefore, I wouldn't be much use in the psych field. My dad encouraged me to go into IT instead. This was during the big internet boom so it made sense.

About a year before graduation, the internet bubble burst. I was lucky to even get a job!

And here I am. I wonder if my 7 year old self would look at me and say, "What the hell happened to you? This is NOTHING like you said you wanted to be."

I definitely NEVER would have thought that I'd be in this job.
Not as a kid, not during high school, not during uni.

Even a year ago I didn't imagine being in this job...
Me? In a cheese factory? Ridiculous!

But here I am.
(And I can't wait to move on)

I still want to be a professional ice skater. Even though I've been ice skating exactly twice :)

I've never fallen though! I just go really really slow :)

I wanted to be a vet FOREVER! In high school I did an internship at a vet hospital and loved it, EXCEPT every time they spayed a cat I passed out!!! I saw soo many surgeries and remained on my feet - but damn little cat comes in to get spayed I was on the floor EVERYTIME! The kicker - I'm not even a cat person OR a fainter!!!

Needless to say I am not a vet!

I named my first cat Sweetiepie. We mostly called her Sweetie, but still, fun! That is such a typical little girl’s pet name. We were so not creative.

I never really wanted to be anything in particular. Now I'm in marketing and sales. Mission accomplished.

Gah. I never ever though I would end up here (does ANYONE dream of being an insurance agent?). And I don't like it at all. But do I know what I really want to do? No!

I wanted to be all sorts of stuff growing up - a tv broadcaster, a children's book writer, a dj. Basically something in the media, which is what I'm technically doing today as an editor/journalist.

I always wanted to be a writer/broadcaster overall, although I had forays into interests in teaching and law.
I have to say that I'm so glad that my little kid wishes weren' necessarily prophetic. i don't really want to be named tiffany anymore, married to a football quarterback.

I always wanted to be a lumberjack.

Then a business man (whatever that is). Then a stockbroker, then a male porn star (women only), then a stockbroker, then a financial planner, then an analyst, then a developer. I'm still really not sure what I want to be when I grow up.

I wanted to be a fighter pilot after I saw Top Gun, but then I realized that it involves scary stuff like war and I quickly chickened out.

Teacher (elementary school)--> Writer (high school)--> Doctor (high school/college)--> Scientist (middle/end of college)--> and now, I am a professional student. Yup.
