The Mr and I were chatting about the various couples we know and it got me wondering, "Do birds of a feather flock together" or is the old adage of "opposites attract" really true?
When I think about The Mr and me, I'd say (much to my chagrin) that we fall into the birds of a feather category. As much as I think he's a total nerd (seriously - could Spike TV play anymore Star Wars movies?! What the heck is going on here? I can't take any more nerdiness!), our overall interests are pretty similar.
We both like photography. Although I like to take pretty and interesting pictures and The Mr is into the technical aspect of how to take the pretty and interesting pictures.
We both like to be active. Although I moderately work out at the gym and The Mr still goes hard with that lame-o P90x workout and can run about 3 times as fast as I can and for much longer.
We both like dogs. Although I like to just cuddle and play with them and The Mr is the one who gets up every morning to let them out and feed them. No wonder they seem to be much more upset when he leaves the house than when I do. Hmph.
We both like to travel. This one took some time for me to get used to. I liked the idea of traveling but hated the physical act of traveling. I still do but it comes so easily to The Mr that he kind of pushes me through it. But since we both love to see new places and he doesn't mind traveling a long distance to get there (therefore helping me to deal with it), it works out quite nicely.
We both like to eat interesting food. Some might argue that I no longer eat interesting food because I'm a vegetarian but I beg to differ. I am now forced to find even MORE interesting food that doesn't involve meat. So there. Keep your plain cheeseburger - I'm trying fabulous curry dishes. The Mr and I love to try new restaurants and the more exotic the food, the better.
We both have similar taste in décor. I don't have much else to say about this but it makes furniture, paint color and other home décor shopping a breeze.
We both love HGTV!
We like a lot of the same television shows. I wish I could say all but I just can't get on board with Heroes and he'd rather hit his jacked up toe with a hammer than watch any of the wedding shows I still DVR. Don't judge me, it's a sickness.
We both like movies. This is kind of a stupid one to write because really… who doesn't like movies? But I don't think you guys understand… I'm a Netflix junkie. This should probably be amended to say "The Mr supports my bizarre obsession with exercising our Netflix membership to its full capacity".
We both have a similar sense of humor. We think we're the funniest people we know.
And lastly - we both have a ridiculous sweet tooth. It's awesome to have someone who will always split a dessert with me.
So we have a pretty decent list of things we have in common. I'm sure there are more important items I could have listed like prioritization of family, similar budgetary viewpoints, education, etc. but that's boring.
Some things that we definitely do NOT have in common:
- His love of Star Wars. I just don't get it.
- His competitive sportiness. I don't know what to call it. He grew up playing sports and I didn't therefore I lack all coordination and desire to win when it comes to sports.
- His ability to fall asleep anywhere. How does he do this? It takes me forever to fall asleep in our own bed let alone on a plane… that could plummet to the ground and kill me. And don't even get me started on how uncomfortable the seats are…
- His inability to stand up to his family. We have completely opposite views about this and I think it has more to do with how we were raised.
- He doesn't read anything longer than a magazine article. I love to read. I am an avid reader. He hates it. I spent a portion of our honeymoon reading books out loud to him. I'm not even kidding.
- He'd rather spend his money on techy gadgets and I'd rather buy clothes and accessories.
Despite our differences, I think we still fall into the birds of a feather category.
We've seen a lot of couples that fall into the opposites attract category and sometimes I don't understand it. I think if we were complete opposites, he'd drive me insane. It's nice to have someone who shares my interests because if I couldn't get him to want to walk the dogs with me or travel with me… or even split desserts with me, I'd probably be a morbidly obese person with unhealthy dogs that never leaves Baltimore.
So what category do you and your significant other fall in? Why do you think it works for you?

Mrs.The Mr? Mom? Mom-in-law?
I'd like to poll all of my wonderful readers about a very serious issue. What do you call your in-laws? Do you call them Mom and Dad? Mom-in-law and Dad-in-law? By their first names? Mr and Mrs. Last name? What?
I don't know what to call my in-laws. I noticed that my brother-in-law has started calling them "mom" and "dad" since becoming an official part of their family. Prior to that, he referred to them by their first names. I thought maybe this had something to do with his relationship with his own parents (who are divorced and remarried) but my sister-in-law refers to them by their first names.
When I'm talking about my in-laws, I use their first names. But when I see them face-to-face, I'm at a loss. I don't want to seem disrespectful by using their first names but at the same time, I am an adult after all. I work with plenty of "older" folks whom I refer to by their first names.
Obviously Mr and Mrs last name is just way too formal. I don't even think I referred to them this way when the Mr and I were just dating (although I believe I caught him referring to my dad once as Mr. last name). For awhile, during our dating years, I referred to my in-laws as Mr. First Name and Ms. First Name. But aren't I a little too old for that? And now I'm their daughter-in-law. I think the formality isn't necessary anymore.
My MIL signs all of her cards and e-mails as either "Mom-in-law" or "Mom Last Name". Is that how I should refer to them?
I guess I could just call them Mom and Dad because it doesn't seem like something they'd object too but it just feels wrong to me. I already have my own Mom and Dad. I feel like this is cheating. I've had this conversation with The Mr and he feels equally uncomfortable with calling my parents Mom and Dad so I know I'm not crazy here.
Then there's a part of me that wonders, "Do people discuss how they wish to be referred after getting married?" Should we have had this conversation? Can I really skate by for the rest of their lives by never referring to them by their names? I think once you have kids it gets easier because they become Grandma and Grandpa but until that day… what do I do?
So how do you refer to your in-laws? And if you've changed what you call them since getting hitched, when did you make the transition and why?
And on a completely unrelated note, YOU!MUST!CHECK!OUT!THESE!PICTURES!

Do Girls Marry INTO a Family?
I had lunch with Angie over the weekend and of course the topic of mother-in-laws came up. I think most people are aware that I've had my fair share of MIL issues in the past. I'm happy to report that we've gotten past it and are now a-okay. I think I have the birth of a baby (not mine) to thank for that.
Aaanywho - I've also heard and even witnessed my fair share of MIL drama. While I think Carrie had the worst experience BY FAR, I think Angie's comes pretty close. But honestly - I don't know many women who have incredible relationships with their MILs.
Here's my theory - mothers of boys are a little bit crazy. There, I said it. I've noticed a shared belief amongst many people that a woman marries INTO a family. Why is it never really seen that a man marries into a family? I'm sure this is tied back to some ancient thing or whatever, but come on. It's 2008. Men take women's last names! Couples even combine last names to create whacky new ones!
I think it's time for the belief that a woman solely marries into a man's family needs to go away. I think when a man and woman marry, they become a new family. In-laws are "extended" family. But that's just me and is a constant battle I'm sure I will fight until I pop out a baby or two.
To get back to my "mothers of boys are a little bit crazy" theory, I've noticed that there seems to be tension whenever the wife of the son wants to spend time with her parents. I'm not talking about my experience here, I'm talking about almost every single one of my married girlfriends' experiences. It's so strange. It seems that there is this expectation that a wife should abandon her "old" family to enter into this new family (especially since she married INTO it).
I don't even know if this post makes any sense. I just think the whole thing is absurd.
On top of that - have you noticed that boys of these crazy mothers can't seem to "stand up" to them? I don't ever see this with girls. I'm completely honest with my mother. That's how I was raised. I don't have a problem telling her that The Mr. cannot climb up a tree to trim the branches that are wrapped around the electrical wires because it would kill him. But good luck getting him to tell his mom that she's out of line for making a bad racial comment! But I see this with a lot of couples. What is it about the mother/son relationship that makes it so tough to break through?
And that's it. I'm sure there are plenty of people who have lovely MILs and I'm not even insulting mine. It's just an interesting dynamic to see or even experience. I'm sure this all relates to Sigmund Freud somehow.

The First Test of Marriage
You know - I always hear/read about how hard marriage is and how you really have to work hard at it but have never related to that. Marriage so far has been easy. We get along great! Sure we bicker and dealing with each other's families isn't always fun but overall, nothing about this marriage has been stressful or hard.
As many of you know, The Mr is starting law school in the fall. He's going to be working full-time and attending evening classes part-time (and amazingly that will still take up 4 nights a week!). With this schedule, he will finish law school in 4 years (as opposed to the typical 3 years).
I've always worked and gone to school. In undergrad, I worked full-time and attending classes full-time. I'm used to this. While grad school is kind of a cake walk for me (aside from the fuckwits that I manage to team up with occasionally), I'm sure law school will be a completely different experience for The Mr and it's something that I can't relate to since I have no idea what law school truly entails.
Anywho - blah blah blah, right? Well one of The Mr's old co-workers who is in the same program that he is about to enter mentioned that she wished she would have switched to full-time when she had the chance. She went on to say that as a full-time law student, you have access to so many opportunities that the evening part-timers don't.
The Mr playfully suggested going full-time to which I freaked out. A one income household?! Ack! We have a mortgage! We have bills! If you can't tell, I worry about finances a lot. I guess I just don't want to end up in my parents' position.
We also like to travel, buy stuff, do stuff... and all of that costs money. The Mr said he could take a student loan to cover living expenses but I'm not okay with that. I am still paying back my undergrad student loans and that didn't include living expenses. I don't want to constantly be in debt.
But I'm torn. As a good partner, I should support him and encourage him to go full time to get exposed to all of the great opportunities afforded to full-timers. But then at the same time, I don't want to end up resenting him because I can't travel anymore (before babies and I'm definitely on a timeline with that) or because we're hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt or because we'll have to eat ramen noodles forever.
I guess this is my first test of marriage? The Mr told me not to worry and that we should just see how his first semester as an evening part-timer goes. Apparently this school allows people to switch from part-time to full-time within the first year. We shall see...
What would you do?

Blurby Monday
There is so much randomness to talk about and every little blurb could probably be its own separate post but you know what? Today is my offical LAST day of the Sring semester from HELL and tomorrow morning I'll be on a flight to Los Cabos, Mexico. So I can't really think beyond little blurbs.
1. I didn't really write much about Mother's Day and this is not because I don't love my mom. I didn't have anything amazing to write up. We stopped by my parents' house in the morning to hang up the 3 enlarged framed photos from our wedding that we got my mom for Christmas and never got around to hanging. Whoops. While we were there, my mom pointed out 3 new screen doors for their ratty 20+ yr old porch that is barely hanging on by a nail and said to The Mr, "can you hang these up real quick? It should only take you 10 minutes." I love my mom and her unrealistic views of housework that she expects me and The Mr. to do.
2. I think my MIL might actually like me again. I might even venture to say that she... loves me? Things have been very cool between us since Christmas and I'm not sure what happened that gave her a change of heart. She went out of her way to make a veggie patty for me on Mother's Day while everyone dined on steak and she repeatedly brought up the idea of me having babies. She actually accepts me enough to produce offspring with her only son! All is well in the families again.
3. This makes me sad. According to the article, my honeymoon locale will be gone wiped out by global warming. The Mr. reminded me that we saw evidence of this when we were there last year. They were in the midst of modifying a beach bungalow because of the rising water. So sad!
4. According to this, my neighborhood is pretty walkable. I guess that's mostly true of my zip code, but I wouldn't necessarily walk everywhere from my house. I could walk everywhere but I like to avoid as many crackheads as possible in a given day. Either way - I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that the only movie theatre they listed was for the porn theatre. Nice. And it's a walkable distance!
5. I want this. It's cute, it helps me feel less guilty about my carbon footprint and my current umbrella has a giant hole in it.
6. Speaking of carbon footprints, does anyone watch Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane? Yeah yeah, lots of people can't stand Kimora Lee Simmons but I love her. She's completely ridiculous and she knows it. Aaanywho - the last episode focused on her trying to live more "green". She went to some eco-guru who calculated her carbon footprint. Apparently her footprint is about 27 tons a year. The average per person is 7 tons. Wow.
7. The Mr. is trying to convince me to let him get a Vespa.

8. I signed up for a bootcamp class in Patterson Park! I've always wanted to do something like this (it's on my 101 list) but the only class I knew of was out of the way. A gym by the park just started up this program. It's an 8 week course that meets 2/nights a week. This better kick my ass!
9. I've been playing kickball for 4 seasons now and this is the FIRST time we've made it to play-offs. I am the glue that keeps my team together. Okay not really... I broke my finger on one of those giant red kickballs when I was 8 years old and the trauma still hasn't left me. I flinch everytime someone throws a ball at me. Clearly, dodgeball is not in my future.
10. I had a very awkward run-in with my psycho ex-boyfriend. It always makes me laugh when I see him out and about because he's such a nerd about it! And it reminds me how lucky I am that The Mr is not such a tool. Seriously - what was I thinking?? We got to the bar and immediately he starts whispering to everyone about me. Even his little croney friend started whispering about me. I don't even know her! I wanted to scream, "Hi! Yes - I'm his ex. We went about about 5 years ago. And look! I'm married and have been for over a year now. I think it's time to let it go, guys."
11. I found out that my a-hole friends bet on when me and The Mr. will go home! It's always guaranteed, apparently, that we'll be the next couple to leave. Sadly - its true. We try to hold out so that we're not the first couple to poop out but we are always quick to leave once another couple falls. We're old.
12. And that reminded me about when we first started dating. We used to go out Thursday-Sunday. We'd stay up half the night just chatting or partying it up. Now we're in bed by 10pm. Awesome.
13. I will eventually post pictures of my nephew soon! We did another baby shoot and this time it was much more successful.
14. Aaand... that's it. What did everyone else get into this weekend?

Farts for Everyone
Katie e-mailed me The Wife's Bill of Rights yesterday. It was meant as a joke and I did laugh a little... but it brought out some of my annoyance with men vs women stereotypes.
Maybe it's unfeminine for me to fart in front of The Mr. but at the same time, why would I hide it? I'm gassy. Big deal. If I really tried to be discreet about it, I'd spent half of my alone time with him in separate rooms. I get that perhaps pulling fingers, farting then laughing hysterically can get old sometimes but I'm not going to "be discrete" just because I'm a woman. F that. Equal rights mean I can fart where I want, dammit!
I agree that The Mr's boob squeeze with the raised eyebrow needs a little work but the act of gazing into each other's eyes and cuddling is ridiculous. My idea of foreplay? Clean the house! Finish a home project! Do something thoughtful. I don't need Kenny G playing in the background to get me in the mood. I need to feel appreciated and perhaps have some of the stress lifted off of me.
On the flip side, there is a Husband's Bill of Rights out there.
What's with this article and farting? And why is it such a male thing? Last I checked, females had intestines and assholes too.
Anywho - so my 1 year wedding anniversary is coming up. For those married gals that read this, what did you guys do to celebrate? Did you exchange gifts? Did you stick to the "traditions" (i.e. paper is the 1 year anniverary gift).
On an unrelated note, how bad is it that I'm totally digging this song that Perez posted on his site. It's frickin Simon Rex rapping. I remember back in 1996 when he hosted MTV Late night and I used to stay up until 3am to watch him. Wow.
Amendment VI
We have the right to clean air.
You may think it's funny, masculine, or natural to pass gas anywhere and anytime you please, but when the smell drives us to gag, it's uncool. There is something inherently wrong in the relationship if you must walk over to us and fart, or if you intentionally set a bad example for the kids. We fart too, but we do so discreetly for a reason. You may not like our potpourri and scented candles, but they're infinitely better than toxic and flammable methane.

Amendment X
We have the right to foreplay.
A fine bottle of wine, soft music, deep looks into each other's eyes, compliments, holding hands, cuddling—these are all forms of foreplay, and we insist on them. Please don't reach for our crotch or breasts and expect us to melt into a porn kitten. It didn't work when we met, it most certainly doesn't work now. Sure, we women are strong and independent, and appreciate an inspired quickie when the moment strikes, but we also have an inner soft spot the size of Texas that needs squeezing and cherishing. We appreciate you more when you think about how it feels to us rather than how it feels to you.
Amendment V
We have the right to teach our sons how to burp and fart.
Sharing bodily functions with our offspring is as much about life as it is about jokes. It's also something that can help brings kids and dads together. Believe me, kids and guys always laugh at farts—that's how we're wired. And we're not talking about being totally gross and inappropriate. We vow to teach them that there is a time and a place for behavior like this—and that the early service at Church is not one of them.
Wow.

For CAG
I received an e-mail from the fabulous Ms. CAG asking where my post was... and here it is!
I don't really have one good thing to talk about in this post so its going to be a random mish mash of fun.
1.
I totally slacked off about buying tickets to see that Body Worlds exhibit at the Maryland Science Center for Sunday (and yes, I know its Superbowl Sunday). I figured it wouldn't be that difficult to get tickets the day of but I took a look this morning and the only timeslots available are after 4pm (and while I could give a crap about the Superbowl, I know the Mr was hoping for some Superbowl party fun somewhere).
I guess that's what I get for slacking! I'll have to try again another time although The Mr is slated to work for the next few weekends.
But seriously - have you heard of this show? Its real bodies that have had some weird creepy horror movie type thing done to them. Okay, its called "plastination" and is described as:
Invented by a scientist and anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977, Plastination is the groundbreaking method of halting decomposition and preserving anatomical specimens for scientific and medical education. Plastination is the process of extracting all bodily fluids and soluble fat from specimens, replacing them through vacuum forced impregnation with reactive resins and elastomers, and then curing them with light, heat, or certain gases, which give the specimens rigidity and permanence. For more information about Dr. Gunther von Hagens, the inventor of the Plastination technique and creator of BODY WORLDS exhibitions
Doesn't it sound like something a mad scientist/serial killer would do. I even think I saw this on CSI or something. Man - that show covers everything (kind of like The Simpsons).
2. While I missed the boat on Body World for this weekend, I did snag tickets to this totally amazing and magical show: The Thunder From Down Under.
I totally peed my pants with excitement when Jamie told me that they were coming to town. I have always wanted to see this show (I love the cheesiness of a beefcake wiggling his wang around for money) but it was only in Vegas... and the last time I was in Vegas, I was the only girl and it was difficult to convince any of the very straight dudes to come with me. Another added bonus is that we'll be crashing Megan's sister's bachelorette party. I LOVE it and I am secretly hoping that it ends up like Megan's bach. party with us getting into a West Side Story like brawl with another bach. party.
Okay... we didn't brawl per se but some heated words were exchanged!
3. CAG asked me a question today regarding married life and making sacrifices (sorry to call you out!). It was actually a hilarious question regarding asking your spouse's permission to do things (she is NOT a believer of such nonsense, I'd like to add). So now I pose this question to all of my readers. In relationships - do you find yourself asking your partner for "permission" to do things?
I don't. The Mr and I only ask each other if we already had something planned on a specific date but we don't feel compelled to ask the other's permission to hang with our pals without each other. That's just strange to me. I do, however, overhear lots of the older married folks in my group ask, what sounds like, permission of their wives. Perhaps this is something that happens when you get older? Do I have a life of calling all the shots to look forward to?
If so... yippeee!
